Design is a relationship between us. Many of my clients come to me saying things like “I didn’t really get a chance to say what I wanted … this is okay, but not what I was intending …” To me, that isn’t saying the design is bad per se, but that, more importantly, the connection between designer and client wasn’t there.
My ultimate goal is to make my clients feel like I understand what they are trying to say … we may need to reach some compromises for budget and practicality reasons, but it isn’t because we couldn’t articulate the vision. In the same light, the success of the relationship is a little like a marriage … you can try to change, with the best of intentions, but ultimately, there needs to be some basic compatibility.
